Experience the biodiversity of the Costa Grande de Guerrero.
El Refugio de Potosí Ecological Park was founded in 2009, and after being closed for various reasons, it reopened its doors on Saturday, November 27, 2021.
Located on the Los Achotes - Barra de Potosí road approximately 25 minutes from downtown Zihuatanejo, El Refugio de Potosi has 7 wonderful hectares of coastal jungle dedicated to promoting conservation and education about the native species of the Costa Grande de Guerrero.
During your visit you will be able to admire an incredible the skeleton of an adult sperm whale 18 meters long (approx. 59ft), one of the largest in the world that was rescued from Barra de Potosí in 2009 and that; After a long process of restoration and procedures for its conservation, it is now on display for all of the visitors.
Throughout the park you willbe able to see different native species such as; hummingbirds, porcupines, snakes, macaws and specimens of the five species of parrots from the region such as the yellow-headed parrot, white-fronted parrot, orange-headed parakeets and the lilac-crowned parrot. You never know what you will see there because all the animals are rescued or come from seizures by PROFEPA and are placed in the care of the shelter.
You will also find an iguanary where you can see many specimens of the green and black iguana (also known as garrobo and pancha), a coati, a black hawk, and temporarily a boa. Within the facilities there is an 18 meter high observation tower from which you can see the Guamilule hill, Barra de Potosí, and even the Zihuatanejo airport tower.
The tour is approxiamently an hour and is led by trained guides who are biology students, with whom everyone will learn about the importance of the biodiversity of the region and the country. The donation is $100mxn per person and they also offer a 50% discount for national tourists and for locals up to 80% by presenting identification. Currently you they are open Saturdays and Sundays from 9am to 1pm.
We recommend that during your visit you avoid bringing food that may attract animals, but please bring water, comfortable clothes and shoes, a cap or hat to protect you from the sun, repellent for mosquitoes, and a great desire to learn and thus take advantage of this educational tool that is the Refuge from Potosí.
