Zihuatanejo has been always distinguished by its fishing, as it is the principal economic activity. It is also arguably the favorite pastime of Zancas, other than basketball. There is a rich variety of fishes and it is normal to see people fishing fom the shore all the way down Paseo del Pescador in Zihuatanejo or in La Escollera on Ixtapa.
All the beaches are abundant with fish, but if you want more adventure, you can out deep sea fishing, where you will find marlin, tuna, sail fish, mahi mahi, and many more.
The Pacific Coast of Mexico is recognized worldwide for this activity, and the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo coasts are certainly not the exception. All year, the different seasons make this destination a top choice for the sport fishing lovers. The "Catch and Rlease" practice is common for most companies now, in order to protect some species.
Considered one of the best places in the world to enjoy this activity, the shores of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo are famous for the huge amount of sail fish reaching 80 kilograms! The average is from 40 and 50 kilograms. You can fish all the year, but the best season is the winter. In May we have the International Sail Fish Tournament, with the Black and the Blue Marlins reaching 230 kilograms. This species is more easily found towards the end of Spring.
Another option for fishing is Puerto Vicente Guerrero; it is a beautiful town located around one and a half hours from Zihuatanejo’s airport.
